The Pick n Pay Group is a South African-based FMCG retailer that operates in eight African countries (incl. South Africa). The business has been listed on the JSE since 1968 and is currently headed up by CEO Sean Summers.
Pick n Pay offers food, non-edible groceries, clothing, health and beauty, liquor, pharmaceuticals, building and hardware (through Boxer), and general merchandise. Stores are multi format and encompass Pick n Pay (corporate and franchise) and TM Supermarkets Zimbabwe, of which the Group owns a 49% share.
After a difficult few years, in mid-2024 Pick n Pay announced that it would unbundle its wholly-owned subsidiary, Boxer Superstores, listing it separately on the JSE. The move is part of the Group’s much needed recapitalisation plan to reduce its substantial debt, strengthen its balance sheet and “make Pick n Pay great again”.
