Editor’s confession time: When I sat down to write the first Tatler in early 2005, I didn’t have a particular interest in the consumer goods industry. In the 20 years since, I have come to learn that this industry – where the pedal of consumer sentiment hits the metal of macroeconomic reality – represents the very best the Beloved Country has to offer. The people, from the youngest bag-packer to the most seasoned CEO. The relentless, driving entrepreneurial spirit, from the pavement hawker on up. The industry-wide sense of what’s possible. The undersung power of South African innovation, which so often puts us ahead of the best in the world. The deep humanity, in little daily acts of courtesy, or when we rally together in a crisis. It’s been my privilege, for a while, to tell the story of this great sector we call home, but the time has come for me to pass the baton. I am happy to be leaving this scurrilous broadsheet in the very best possible hands and look forward to watching its evolution. Enjoy the read.
