Shoprite Holdings Limited is an investment holding company, whose combined subsidiaries constitute the largest fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) retailer on the African continent and the Indian Ocean Islands. Listed on the JSE in the Food Retailers and Wholesalers sector in South Africa since 1986, with secondary listings on Stock Exchanges in Namibia since 2002 and Zambia since 2003. It is noted that Shoprite is assessing its Africa position and have recently exited Nigeria, and no longer allocating further capital in the Kenyan market.
The Group, headed up by CEO Pieter Engelbrecht, has a portfolio of over 2,800 stores, and operates in 15 countries across Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. The South Africa division trades through seven trading formats underpinned by seventeen trading brands, with an extended business to business and branded value-added services arm.
Shoprite’s primary business is food retailing; offering extends to a broad range of goods and services including household, furniture, pharmaceuticals, hospitality/ticketing and financial services/customer rewards.
