United States Mitigating Meat Supply Chain Challenges

The meat and poultry industries along with retailers are facing unique challenges that are exposing the need to further innovate and evaluate the supply chain process. Despite high demand and strong supply, grocery shelves are sitting empty and farmers are having to cull flocks and herds. Retailers are in a  position to alleviate

short-term supply chain stress and build the groundwork for long-term changes. A short-term solution to resolve out-of-stocks can be to cut back on variety while focusing on bestsellers, while identifying where smaller packs can provide added benefits such as accommodating more customers under protein purchasing limitations. This may include focusing on one lean point for ground beef (focus on 80/20 vs. 90/10,  etc.) or smaller boneless packs of proteins instead of larger packs or bone in product. Longer-term recommen  dations include developing strategic partnerships with local suppliers in order to enhance supply security while preparing for future challenges.

Japan

IMPACT OF THE COVID-19 ON JAPAN'S SUPPLY CHAIN
Surge in demand has put unprecedented pressure on grocery retail supply chains across the globe as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. In countries like Japan that rely very heavily on imports and have complex supply chains, it is even more difficult for retailers to predict and address disruptions. Identifying opportunities to build more transparency throughout the supply chain during this time will be critical for the long-term ability for retailers to effectively react and keep essential items in stock. Retailers in  Japan are utilizing processes such as score carding to help focus on strategic,  collaborative relationships with suppliers. This process provides the opportunity to evaluate current sources for their most important private brand items and assess the strength of their relationships and level of transparency. Establishing stronger collaboration with suppliers across their network will strengthen the total supply chain, making it more resilient for the future.
